How it started and what we would like to see by 2015!
It started with an unexpected encounter with a university student, Ms. Ji Hye Ahn, in the summer of 2009. It was about four months after I founded a social publishing company Edit-the-World, which was intended to provide a publishing platform for socially conscious content that would otherwise be neglected due to its low commercial prospect.
On another hot day in that summer, I was invited to a university to talk about how social enterprise could help address various social issues in developing countries around the world, which was thought to be one of the first speeches themed on such issues in Korea.
Ji Hye was among the participants and in a couple of days she emailed me, saying “can you please help me with providing children books to Burundi?” It turned out she visited the country a few months ago. She found it shocked that children there hardly have any book to read. That was indeed her discontent.
Her story simply resonated with my own discontent: lack of socially valuable content simply because of its lack of economic potential. So we joined forces to create Books for Burundi in September 2009. After managing to navigate the uncharted path, we were lucky to revisit the country with over 6,000 copies of two different kinds of books translated in Kirundi, Burundi mother tongue, in early 2011.
Books International, founded in the summer of 2011 along with the honorable recognition of UNESCO Official Project on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), is an augment of such pioneering a venture into all the other Least Developed Countries (LDCs) classified by the United Nations. In line with other international efforts to realize the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 as its final closing year, Books International humbly aims to reach out to all the 48 LDCs with locally suitable content in local languages.
I would like to give special thanks to those who all inspired this journey and have been together in its various steps. As Books International is not a movement so much as a community, its story would not be able to continue unfolding without its family members and supporting friends.
What would be your discontent? If it has something to do with education or books, why not join our community and become part of our story? It is up to you to find your role or design your role in this exciting story.
After all, it is story that counts, not money one earns or companies one works for.
